The LOWA Youth Angler Award

The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA), Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and The Coastal Angler Magazine/The Angler have established the new Youth Angler of the Year Award (YAA) for youth 15 and under. The goal of this new program is to encourage youth participation in fishing, thereby helping to keep outdoor traditions alive in the Bayou State.

YAA’s secondary goal is to encourage aspiring outdoor journalists by requiring youth to write a story about and take photos of their fishing trips. Young fishermen and women are encouraged to carry a notepad, pen, and camera to take notes and photographs during their fishing trips (or to use their smart phones). The program sponsors will select one male and one female youth angler of the year based on the stories received. Stories will be judged on story matter first and spelling and grammar second. Youth may enter consecutive years until the age of 15.

LOWA and LDWF expect the Youth Angler Award competition to grow in coming years.
